Sewing the long seams.......... from Exuberant Color

I forgot to take a photo of the final layout until after I started sewing rows together.
In this photo all of the rows have been sewn together and now I'm sewing the long crosswise seams.

It was getting late so I quit after 3 rows were sewn together.  I'll finish it today.

I got my order of black 1/8" elastic and I ended up making 9 masks yesterday.

These are the Redbuds that planted themselves along my driveway several years ago.  That is my neighbor's garbage can.  I didn't figure I could ask him ...

On the design wall........... from Exuberant Color

This is the first layout and I can already see areas that need to be changed.  I will be playing with the layout today and hopefully be ready to sew it together by tonight.
Here is the same scene as yesterday's photo only its sunny in this one.  I need to get out and take a photo across the whole backyard today.

I made 6 more masks.  I think I'll just stay on this routine of 6 a day so it doesn't become a chore.

16 patches all afternoon and evening.......... from Exuberant Color

I have 34 more 16 patches sewn for the African and solids quilt.  I had decided to add one more row in both directions so I needed more than the 21 predicted in an earlier post.  Now they just need a final press and they will go to the design wall.
It was a rainy day yesterday so I took a photo of the pink and green backyard from the kitchen window looking south.

I made 6 more masks Monday.  The second from the right is made with denim from a pair of lightweight jeans.  I gave that one to ...

Alternate blocks............... from Exuberant Color

Finally I took the 16 patches made with African fabrics and solids to the basement double design wall.  I had intended to use several different large prints as the alternate blocks but ended up cutting them all from the same fabric.
This is the fabric that I cut.  It is folded in half here so what you see is about 21" wide by over a yard in length.  I will rearrange the alternate blocks once I have all of the 16 patches pieced and on the wall. I need to make about 21 more of them.

The Redbud trees are ...

Paperwork and not much else................ from Exuberant Color

I started going through stacks of paperwork and 5 hours later I had to walk away from it.  Still not done........
When I was in the basement I looked through the neutral color larger prints and found 5 that might work with the 182 neutral 16 patch blocks I made over a year ago.  It will become 2 or 3 quilts with the plain blocks added into at least one of the quilts.
Even though I thought I would design the 6th Spring Star, all I did was add 4 borders to a tiny crazy pieced block and knit a ...

Switching projects............ from Exuberant Color

Among other things that I did yesterday I made 12 more blocks for the framed 9 patch quilt top.  11 of them are Kaffe fabrics and one is a Brandon Mably fabric.

It snowed off and on all day yesterday.  The streaks are the snowflakes when it was snowing the heaviest.  It piled up on pine and evergreen trees but the ground was too warm for more than a thin coating.

Decisions, decisions.................. from Exuberant Color

I sewed 9 patches with fabrics 6 and 7 and cut some edge triangles of fabric 7 since I have a lot of that fabric.  I contemplated stopping at this color.

Fabric 7 is a strange color, a dull gold background and greenish khaki color flowers.   It is a little darker than it looks here.

Then I laid the piece of fabric 8 against the fabric 7 to see if it is going to add anything to the quilt.

Then I cropped out all of the white design wall to get a better idea what I am going to do ...

A lot of seams......... from Exuberant Color

This is what the postage stamp quilt top looked like as I finished sewing the last seam.

I flipped it over to check how well everything was matched.  You can click on the photo and enlarge to see how I did.

Finally to the design wall to have its portrait shot taken.  4032 little squares, 1.5" which finished at 1".  The top measures 55.5" x 71.5".  Inspiration for this one is from here.

This is the variety of solids that I used.  There are 4 squares of each left over so I could make double 4 patch ...

Blocks on the design wall........... from Exuberant Color

l put the 63 blocks up on the design wall and changed a few several times.  I think this is the final layout.  It will only change if I make a mistake while piecing it.

One third of each square ends up in seam allowance on the back, lots and lots of seams............

The last blocks................ from Exuberant Color

The last 8 postage stamp blocks are done....whew!!  It was 10 p.m. when I pressed the last one so I'll play at the design wall today.

Here are the leftovers - 2 stacks of solid colors and all of the prints needed to make those 2 blocks if I so choose and the leftovers on the table next to the box.

Taking inventory............. from Exuberant Color

I needed 8 more blocks for the postage stamp quilt so I decided I needed to take inventory and see if I had enough squares already cut.  I have enough solids cut for 10 blocks and enough print squares for 11 blocks so I may be able to just use what is already cut.  Since there are duplicates of lots of the print squares I may run out of the right variety to not use 2 of the same fabric in any block.  In that case I will cut a few more squares.

Here are the 7 most recent blocks ...

#2 finish for February 2020................ from Exuberant Color

Completed, the zipper quilt.  Ditch quilted on my straight stitch machine, hand finished binding.  It is 59" x 71".

The large leaf print is a full width strip and the other smaller leaf fabric is the rest of the width of the backing.  It was a long piece leftover from the backing on another quilt.

Friday I sewed the borders on the wonky heart quilt and then loaded it on the longarm.  Yesterday afternoon I quilted it

I quilted in many size loops with a variegated Rainbows Superior brand thread on top, bottom line by Superior in the bobbin.

I ...

Binding.......again.............. from Exuberant Color

I could have used just about any color binding to go with the front of the quilt so I looked at the more limited colors on the back and chose this 20+ year old Hoffman fabric for the binding.  I think it is probably closer to 30 years old.

I decided to hand finish the binding on this one so I got it sewn on and started the hand stitching.

I also did more cutting of print 1.5" squares for my postage stamp quilt.  It was cold yesterday so it was a good day to just stay inside.  40s ...

Great progress!!........... from Exuberant Color

I was determined to get the last 5 rows of quilting (100 minutes) done yesterday on the zipper quilt, and I did it!!  I also got all of the basting stitches pulled out. Now I need to choose binding and make the decision whether I will hand or machine finish it.

I wanted to finish the 4 postage stamp blocks that were partially done and did that too.  I didn't get the cutting done that I planned but I will do that today.

Getting back to postage stamp blocks...... from Exuberant Color

Last night after company left I worked on my postage stamp blocks again.  I'm going to have to do several a day if I intend to finish this top by the end of this month.  I think I need 19 blocks and I have 3 sewn in one direction and the red solid color squares laid out for a fourth block.  I need to cut a LOT more print squares because I'm using the same ones over and over and I would prefer there is more variety.

Slow start....... from Exuberant Color

I was feeling really lazy yesterday but I finally worked on a few things.  I made 5 new strippy blocks for a future project.

I still had the last batch on the wall so I put the new ones up for a photo. Now they will join the other 54 blocks and wait for inspiration.

I have seen very few birds the last month or two.  The crows are the only visitors lately and they clean up under the suet baskets.

I wanted a red fabric for the binding on the Australian triangle quilt but didn't have enough of ...

2 blocks.......... from Exuberant Color

I tried to get inspired to cut and press fabric for a large backing yesterday but in the end I just spent the whole day cutting pieces for 3 quilts.  Last night I sewed 2 more postage stamp blocks.  I have miscounted the blocks three times now.  I thought I had 50 made but there are only 44 and I need 63 so I have 19 to go to finish that top in February.

Winter weather is back, snow overnight.  Now we will see how much will melt with temperatures slightly above freezing.

Zipper top finished.......... from Exuberant Color

The zipper quilt top is finally sewn together and I love it!  It is 60" x 72".  Here is where the inspiration quilt and cutting directions are found.  Lynn calls hers "Zip".

I chose the backing fabrics too.  The large leaf print will be full width and the other 2 fabrics are from my "long strips" box, leftovers from trimming other backings.

I was going to piece another backing yesterday but instead I spent 3 hours sorting a blanket box full of scraps into "I want" and "I don't want" and also into 2 size groups.  The box is ...

Planning the layout.......... from Exuberant Color

I decided to put all of the zipper blocks up on the design wall and then decide what I needed for the last 4 blocks.

This is the group of fabrics I cut for the last 4 blocks.

Later in the afternoon I got the blocks sewn and last night I sewed the top together.  I will get it pressed today and have its photo ready for tomorrow.

2 more blocks............ from Exuberant Color

Yesterday was errand day after busy days of cleaning and company.  I sewed 2 more postage stamp blocks last night.  With my plan to finish one of the solid with prints series tops each month, I'm well on track with both the zipper blocks (need 4 more) for January and the postage stamp blocks (need 11 more) for February.  I have about half of the blocks made for the framed 9 patches so that will probably be March's finish.
I emptied some project boxes that had batik pieces in them and then sorted them by size.  I have ...
